I DIDN’T BECOME AN ADDICT OVERNIGHT.
I WASN’T BORN AN ADDICT.
I had a successful career, family, and upbringing — and I woke up one day and didn’t recognize the man in the mirror.
I was a stand-out 3-time all-conference NCAA baseball player, an accomplished corporate Vice President, and Nebraska-born Californian, on the outside looking in I was the “All-American Man.” But I was lonely. I was tired, and I felt like a fraud. I didn’t have the courage to tell anyone how I felt and I didn’t know what to do – so I did what MOST men do today – I numbed out. I pretended that everything was okay, I didn’t ask for help, and as a result, I went deeper and deeper into a downward spiral of addiction. In April 2015, I hit rock bottom.
A family intervention forced me into rehab. I made a choice to get sober. I learned to finally deal with my shame, guilt, fear, resentment, unhealthy patterns, and unresolved trauma….I got to FEEL ALL OF IT! For so long, I pushed down my emotions, and it didn’t happen overnight (I still cry a LOT today – and I’m not afraid to feel anymore). My mess has now become my message. My rock bottom and darkest hour is now my greatest asset and brightest light to inspire hope for others. I’m on a mission to empower other men to take radical responsibility and create new possibilities in their life.
